Lunchlezing Wim van Saarloos
Wim van Saarloos will start with some personal advice based on his own physics career, and briefly introduce FOM as a physics organisation in turbulent times. The main part of his talk concerns polymer fluids, which have a large viscosity. By comparing how other fluids flow at low Reynolds numbers, it was for long believed that such flows in a straight pipe would normally not be turbulent. However, a few years ago, it was predicted that such flows would show a transition to turbulence. Wim will sketch our arguments and show that clever recent experiments confirm the predicted scenario.
